POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John's vs. Delaware State|
Nov. 29, 2016
St. John's Head Coach Chris Mullin...
On the amount of three-pointers attempted:
"They sat in a zone all night. Shot selection is something we've been trying to stress. It goes hand-in-hand when our big guys struggle a little bit to finish."
On his thoughts on the defensive struggle:
"Everything [was a struggle]. Even when we did have a few decent possessions on defense, we didn't rebound. One time we got back cut with a second left. They kind of dominated that [end of the floor] just because of their efficiency on offense."
On the carryover from the Atlantis trip:
"I thought our first few games [in the Atlantis] we played well. The last game we did not play well at all. Even in that game, we had Old Dominion shooting 20 percent at halftime but they had 14 offensive rebounds. It seems like anytime we covered one thing, on defense [against Old Dominion] overall it was pretty good but we didn't rebound or score, tonight the opposite happened. Our defense was horrible one-on-one and as a team. I thought we did a good job yesterday flushing that whole trip out, but the carryover is probably more the possessions that happened tonight. When you miss a few looks and get a little tentative, frustration sets in a little bit and then you try and press."
On overlooking Delaware State:
"I don't think so. We always talk about not fearing anybody but respecting everybody. We went through our regular preparation. [Delaware State] had to go out there and make those shots and I don't think you can deny that. We've got to give them credit."
Sophomore Guard Federico Mussini...
On the loss:
"I don't think we played with enough energy. We have to work on that, especially after a week of four losses. We need to play with more energy and play hungrier."
On learning from the loss:
"We just need to stay together and not think too much about previous games, but learn from those games and take things one game at a time."
Junior Forward Bashir Ahmed...
On the loss:
"We didn't do a great job moving the ball around their zone. They played really good defense and we needed to move the ball around more. Some shots we rushed and we thought we had open looks, but some of these shots weren't good shots. We need to be more patient and find the right shots."
Delaware State Head Coach Keith Walker...
On the win:
"We're very fortunate to win. I thought our guys did a good job. They played well and stuck to the game plan. We were able to do what we had practiced doing. We were able to have enough discipline to win at the end. The guys did well and I'm proud of the way they played tonight."
On winning against a BIG EAST program like St. John's:
"I think it bodes well for what teams in our league can do. We have some very good basketball teams in our league. We often have to play games at disadvantages. I thought St. John's did a good job. When I was watching them play, I was very concerned with that guard play. I thought that guard play was excellent. We were able to slow them down, because if we had allowed them to play the pace they are accustomed to, it would have been a contest in their favor. I'm very happy we pulled this win out."
On St. John's using its size:
"We knew that they had some bigs in their rotation and I thought they used them more than I wanted to see anyway. I anticipated the bigs to play and we prepared for them to play that way."
