Shamorie Ponds Named to NABC Division I All-District Second Team

QUEENS, N.Y. – Having already received All-BIG EAST First Team and USBWA All-District Team honors following a standout sophomore campaign, Shamorie Ponds was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-District Second Team for the second-straight season on Wednesday.
A 6-foot-1 guard from Brooklyn, Ponds led the BIG EAST in scoring (21.6 ppg) and steals (2.3 spg) during the regular season while also finishing top-5 in the conference in assists (4.7 apg). Ponds led the Johnnies in scoring in 21 of his 30 appearances in 2017-18, including a Carnesecca Arena/Alumni Hall record 44 points in a win over Marquette on Feb. 10. He recorded double-figures 27 times with 16 20-point efforts and six 30-point outbursts.
Over the course of the season, Ponds was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll seven times and collected a pair of the conference’s Player of the Week awards. Ponds shined the brightest during St. John’s four-game win streak, as the second-year Johnnie averaged 32.2 points and 5.0 assists in victories over No. 4/5 Duke, No. 1/1 Villanova, Marquette and DePaul. During the two-week hot stretch, Ponds received National Player of the Week recognition from the USBWA, Atlanta Tipoff Club and
Ponds finished the campaign with 647 points, the most ever by a St. John’s sophomore and eighth-highest scoring total on the program’s single season list.
