QUEENS, N.Y. – As part of a trip out West this December that also features a matchup with Arizona State at The Staples Center, the St. John’s men’s basketball team will face off against Grand Canyon University at Talking Stick Resort Arena, the home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 11:30 p.m. ET.
The contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU and will be part of a thrilling doubleheader that pits perennial national powers Arizona against Texas A&M in the opening game of the twin bill.
Coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons in the WAC, the Antelopes are led by three-time NBA All-Star Dan Majerle, a legendary figure in the Phoenix basketball community and a teammate of Red Storm Assistant Coach Mitch Richmond on 1988 United States Olympic Team.
The Red Storm returns a young, but talented squad this upcoming season, led by a pair of BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selections in Shamorie Ponds and Marcus LoVett. Last season, Ponds ranked fifth in the conference in scoring at 17.4 points per game and set a St. John’s freshman record with 573 points while also becoming the first freshman in nearly two decades to lead the league in steals.
In addition to veteran contributors in Bashir Ahmed, Tariq Owens, Kassoum Yakwe and Amar Alibegovic, the Red Storm also welcomes a slew of talented first-year talents to Queens. After sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer regulations, Justin Simon and Marvin Clark II will seek to aid the Red Storm after promising stints at Arizona and Michigan State, respectively. The Red Storm will also look for contributions from freshmen Sidney Wilson, a Bronx native with explosive athleticism, and Bryan Trimble, a promising guard from Kansas City.
Tickets for The Valley of the Sun Shootout go on sale Friday, July 28 at 12 p.m. ET at TalkingStickResortArena.com. For more information on the doubleheader visit ValleyoftheSunShootout.com.
