St. John’s Releases Non-Conference Schedule|
Aug. 21, 2017
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s men’s basketball program has finalized its non-conference schedule for the 2017-18 campaign. A 13-game out-of-conference lineup, which features seven home games, is headlined with a showdown against Duke at Madison Square Garden. In addition, the Johnnies will play six neutral site games, as the squad goes up against top competition inside state-of-the-art venues in Los Angeles, Orlando, Phoenix and locally at Mohegan Sun.
Under third year head coach Chris Mullin, St. John’s returns a talented core that helped increase its win total by eight games last season and advance in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2011. BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selections Shamorie Ponds and Marcus LoVett, the top returning scoring duo in the league, along with a youthful group of returnees and newcomers, will put their talents on display in marquee events such as the AdvoCare Invitational, Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase and The Valley of the Sun Shootout.
St. John’s will kick off 2017-18 with four-straight at Carnesecca Arena, beginning with its opener on Nov. 10 versus New Orleans. Four days later, the Johnnies will host Central Connecticut before facing Nebraska on Nov. 16 in the third annual Gavitt Tipoff Games between the BIG EAST and Big Ten.
A home date with Molloy on Nov. 20 will serve as the final tune up for the Red Storm before heading to Orlando to face a loaded field in the AdvoCare Invitational. St. John’s tips off with Oregon State on Nov. 23 for its opening round contest of one of the top early season tournaments in college basketball. The following day, the Red Storm will take on either Missouri or Long Beach State. St. John’s will then wrap up the event with a third game on Nov. 26, against a team from the opposite side of the bracket, which consists of West Virginia, Nebraska, UCF and Marist.
St. John’s will make a brief return to Queens for a meeting with Sacred Heart on Dec. 2 before jetting out West for a pair of games in NBA venues. The first stop is Talking Stick Resort Arena, home of the Phoenix Suns, where the Johnnies will take on Grand Caynon University, led by three-time NBA All-Star Dan Majerle, as part of The Valley of the Sun Shootout doubleheader with Arizona and Texas A&M. Three days later, St. John’s will be on center stage in Los Angeles at STAPLES Center to face off with Arizona State in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.
The Johnnies return to New York City to make their Madison Square Garden debut on Dec. 17 versus Iona, which will mark St. John’s 51st all-time appearance in the MSG Holiday Festival. The Red Storm then travels to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. to go up against Saint Joseph’s in the Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase on Dec. 20.
St. John’s will wrap up non-league action on Feb. 3, as the Johnnies step away from their grueling BIG EAST schedule to host Duke at “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” The first meeting between the programs with fellow Naismith Memorial Hall of Famers Mullin and Mike Krzyzewski on the sidelines will also mark the 23rd all-time contest between two of college basketball’s top-10 winningest programs.
