Queens, NY - St. John's University will host the grand opening for its state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Taffner Field House, on Thursday evening. Attendees at the recently-completed facility's grand opening will include various faculty, staff and other members of the University community, as well as Donald and Eleanor Taffner, for whom the building is named. Mrs. Taffner, a member of the University Board of Trustees, and her husband Donald, an alumnus, have long been strong supporters of the University, specifically its athletic programs.
"We are delighted to honor Eleanor and Don and their family in this special and lasting way," said Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. John's University. "We thank them for their continued support of our students and for their unwavering commitment to our mission of service to those in need."
"The Taffner Field House is the latest addition toward more modern, state-of-the-art athletic facilities at St. John's," said Chris Monasch, Director of Athletics. "The new field house will give our basketball teams the competitive advantages they need and provides the campus with a venue that our entire student body can enjoy."
Head men's basketball coach Norm Roberts observed, "The Taffner Field House is a first-class facility that will help us compete in the newly expanded BIG EAST. The facility ranks with the best in the conference and is a great place to call our own. The field house will be instrumental in helping our program take its next steps toward success."
"It is great to have a practice venue to call "home,'" commented Kim Barnes Arico, head women's basketball coach. "The Taffner Field House features a number of state-of-the-art amenities, and our current and future student-athletes will be able to take advantage of these features as part of their University experience at St. John's."
At approximately 43,000 square feet, the $16 million Taffner Field House includes four full size basketball courts (two for varsity basketball and two for Student Life) and dedicated locker rooms for both student recreation and men's and women's basketball. It contains new offices and meeting rooms for the men's and women's basketball staffs, as well as weight training and medical training rooms. The facility also houses office and meeting space for Recreation and Intramural Sports.
