The St. John's men's basketball team will hold walk-on tryouts on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 6 a.m. for those students interested in testing their hardwood prowess, and earning a shot at representing the Red and White on the court.
Prior to trying out, all potential walk-on athletes must attend the mandatory NCAA Compliance meeting on Monday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. in the conference room on the second floor of Taffner Field House. As per NCAA rules, potential walk-ons may not miss class for this meeting. Each potential walk-on also must ensure the following:
Your class schedule must not conflict with practices. Practices vary between early-morning sessions prior to 9 a.m., and afternoon sessions that may take place at 12:30 p.m. You must be available 30 minutes prior to practice. As per NCAA rules, you may not miss class to try-out or practice with a team.
You must be registered as a full-time student (minimum of 12 credit hours) pursuing a bachelor's degree on the St. John's University Queens campus.
You must complete a Men's Basketball Walk-On Try-Out Form in the Men's Basketball Office prior to the mandatory compliance meeting on Monday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. in the Taffner Field House conference room.
All walk-ons must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

You must bring a current health insurance card and St. John's University medical forms (links above) to Ron Linfonte, Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, in Taffner Field House Room 110. No doctor's notes will be accepted. Please note, University Health Services requires a 48-hour lead time to process physical examination forms. Once the athletic trainer signs the Compliance/Medical approval form, you must bring this signed form to the Compliance Office located in Carnesecca Arena, Room 206 no later than 4:30pm, Thursday, October 13, 2011.

The first year of The Steve Lavin Era included a 21-12 overall record, marking St. John's most wins since the 2002-03 season, with six Top 25 victories, four over Top 10 opponents and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. The USBWA District II Coach of the Year, Lavin transformed a team that finished in 13th place in the BIG EAST Conference in 2009-10 at 6-12 to a squad that tied for third in 2010-11 at 12-6 -only twice before has a jump of such magnitude occurred in BIG EAST Conference history. The Red Storm finished its season ranked 18th in the Associated Press Top 25, marking the first time it qualified for the postseason as a ranked team since 2000-01. The Red Storm, which posted a 7-1 record in eight regular season games at Madison Square Garden (capacity: 19,353) and a 5-2 record on campus at Carnesecca Arena (capacity: 5,602) saw its home attendance climb by 38.1 percent, marking the fourth-largest increase in NCAA Division I men's basketball.
