Pregame Quotes: St. John's vs. Wagner

Junior guard/forward Sir'Dominic Pointer emphasized to the press how important the Wisconsin game was for the Red Storm.

Nov. 14, 2013

Head Coach Steve Lavin

On a defensive-focused practice week:

"It takes longer to build habits but within a week you can make progress in certain areas that need work.  Pressuring without fouling and staying attached to shooters on the perimeter was a big point of emphasis."

On tomorrow's starting lineup:

"There are a number of scenarios in play, but a strength of this team is that we are two or three deep at each position. We are looking for most effective combination of players."

On Wagner's speed:

"Wagner has a speed advantage but we have a length and size edge. They might be the fastest team that we'll face this year in terms of utilizing the bounce. They have multiple players that get down the court quickly and can beat you off the bounce to shot make and play make."

On Sir'Dominic Pointer's importance to the team:

"Dom is a very unique talent. He has the ability to influence the game at both ends of the court in dramatic fashion. He's not someone worried about his minutes or whether he's in the starting lineup as his focus is on competing and winning. He's what we call a Happy Warrior. He has a bit of an unorthodox approach yet is a very gifted player."

Junior Guard/Forward Sir'Dominic Pointer

On a defensive-focused practice week:

"This was an all defensive week for us. It let us know we need to stop three point shooters. In the zone, we need to be aware and pressure the ball. We need to know when a person is contained and make good judgments on when to go block a shot."

On the importance of the Wisconsin game:

"It let us know we were a good team. We lost that game, but we took a lot of good stuff out of it."

Junior Guard Phil Greene IV

On Sir'Dominic Pointer's importance to the team:

"He does everything on the floor. Dom is a big part of what we do. He's a good leader and he has grown a lot. He keeps the team together."

On the team's practices this past week:

"The theme this week was defense, the whole week in practice. We've been working on rotations, getting the zone down and getting used to the new hand checking rules. It has been nonstop defense.

Junior Guard D'Angelo Harrison

On Sir'Dominic Pointer's importance to the team:

"Dom is the definition of a `glue guy.' He's the kind of guy who could have triple-double and it won't even be talked about. He can block shots, he's athletic, he can shoot, dunk, and he can guard the team's best player. He's very, very important to us."

On the Red Storm's season-opening loss against Wisconsin:

"Every game is a learning experience. There were time where we had good stretches and we competed with them but you're down by 18 to Wisconsin by 18 then you have to give them credit. It's rare that you come back. We just have to continue those good stretches throughout the whole game.

On what the team needs to work on defensively:

"We made a lot of mistakes defensively and they capitalized on them. They're correctable errors. We missed assignments. Every time we missed an assignment they buried a 3-pointer. After sitting through a long film session we woke up and we realized what we had to do."
