Ponds Poaches Fifth-Straight BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll Spot

QUEENS, N.Y. – For the fifth-straight week, Shamorie Ponds has been recognized by the conference for his efforts, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this morning by the league office.
Ponds led the Red Storm in scoring for the ninth time in just 11 tries this season on Sunday against Iona, netting 14 of his game-high 16 points in the second half of a 69-59 victory over the Gaels. The sophomore from Brooklyn went a perfect 8-of-8 from the line, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals in the Johnnies’ season debut at “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”
On the campaign, Ponds leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference at 19.7 points per game, reaching double figures 10 times, recording six 20-point efforts and eclipsing the 30-point plateau once. The only player in the BIG EAST to rank in the top 10 in the conference in scoring, rebounding (6.3 rpg) and assists (4.8 apg), Ponds also sits at second in the league in steals (2.5 spg) and third in free throw percentage (.897).
Ponds and the Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Mohegan Sun Arena for a matchup with Saint Joseph’s in the Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU and 970 AM WNYM.
