Shamorie Ponds Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the sixth-straight week as announced by the conference on Tuesday. The sophomore from Brooklyn helped lead the Johnnies to their 10th victory of the season last week with a win over Saint Joseph’s at Mohegan Sun Arena.
 
Ponds scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lift St. John’s (10-2) to a 77-73 victory against the Hawks in the Hoophall Holiday Showcase. The BIG EAST’s third leading scorer at 20.3 points per game this season, Ponds drained 9-of-15 attempts from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, while also sinking 8-of-11 attempts at the line with four coming in the final 23 seconds. Ponds also recorded four assists, two steals and one block against Saint Joe’s.
 
On the season, Ponds has scored double figures in 11 of 12 games and has reached the 20-point mark seven times. The Preseason All-BIG EAST selection also leads the conference with 2.5 steals per game and ranks fourth averaging 4.8 assists.
 
St. John’s returns to action on Thursday when the Johnnies host Providence (9-4) in Queens for their BIG EAST opener. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
