FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The St. John's men's golf team concluded play at the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate on Monday, with a 13th place finish.
As a team the Johnnies carded a final-round 295 to turn in a combined 899 (+35) at the conclusion of the two-day event, to finish ahead of BIG EAST foe Villanova.
Austin Peay State claimed the team title, after shooting a one-under 863 in three rounds. Toledo and Florida Gulf Coast U rounded out the top three spots, turning in an 866 (+2) and 869 (+5).
Leading the Red Storm in the two-day event was Austin Briggs, who posted a first round 75 followed by a pair of 72s in the final rounds of play, carding a 219 (+3) over three rounds to finish in a tie for 17th place.
Sophomore Gerald Mackedon, had a solid performance on day two, shooting a final round 75 to turn in a 226, while Ross Moore and Andrew Baek both registered a 227 at the two-day event.
Rounding out scoring for the five-man squad was Matthew Sweeney who shot a final round 81, to finish 240.
Individually, Cole Castro of Florida Gulf Coast U paced the field with a six-under 210, with Matt Naumec of Boston College and Austin Lancaster of Austin Peay State both turning in a five-under 211, to tie for second.
The Johnnies will return to action on April 7, when the team travels to Grasonville, Md. for the Towson Spring Invite.
