QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team is gearing up to hit the links, as the team travels to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the second-annual Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate, hosted by Loyola Md. This will be the Johnnies first time competing in said tournament.
The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club, with two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. The first round of play will begin with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
“The team is very excited about playing Fort Lauderdale CC.” It’s a beautiful golf course with some great weather in the forecast,” said St. John’s head coach Mal Galletta. “We had a good tournament last week in Arizona and played a few rounds in New York this week before leaving, so we feel ready.”
The 14-team field will consist of Austin Peay, Boston College, Connecticut, Davidson, Drexel, Florida Atlantic, Florida Golf Coast, Hartford, Loyola University Maryland, Old Dominion, St. Bonaventure, St. John’s, Toledo and Villanova.
After leading the Johnnies in their first outing of the spring, Austin Briggs will enter this week’s tournament as the team’s number one golfer after carding a combined seven-under 209 at the Loyola Intercollegiate.
Ross Moore and Gerald Mackedon are slotted in the second and third positions, with Andrew Baek, and Matthew Sweeney rounding out the five-man lineup.
The Red Storm are coming off of a 15th-place finish after recording a combined two-under 862 in the team’s most recent outing at the Loyola Intercollegiate.
In last year’s inaugural tournament, Richmond claimed the first-place team title after turning in an 871 following three rounds of play. BIG EAST rival, Seton Hall, and Florida Gulf Coast finished out second and third place. Keegan Hoff of Richmond captured the individual title by shooting 74-71-67=212 (-4).
The par-72 course was built in 1957. The North Course is a classic Dick Wilson influenced track designed by Red Lawrence with all the golf components. The 18-hole championship course features undulating greens and unique bunkers that challenge golfers of all abilities. The North Course hosts yearly member events as well as PGA, USGA, and FSGA events.
Scoring results will be posted to RedStormSports.com in conclusion to each day.
