Hot off one of the most successful seasons in team history, the St. John’s men’s golf team will await word on a bid to the 2007 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. The Red Storm is currently ranked No. 1 in the East Region and will find out Monday, May 7, which regional site it will be headed to. The announcement will be made at 6 p.m. ET on NCAASports.com. Possible regional sites include Phoenix, Ariz., Chicago, Ill., and Atlanta, Ga.
“We are really excited to get back to the NCAA tournament and show our talent on the national stage,” said head coach Frank Darby. “Our guys have been working hard all year long with NCAAs in sight, and I believe we still have a lot of great golf left to play.”
St. John’s broke open its spring schedule by hosting the Treasure Coast Classic in Fort Pierce, Fla., at the Indian Hills Golf Club. Co-captains Keegan Bradley and George Zolotas led the team to unprecedented success as the squad took home the championship title, finishing 40-under par. Zolotas’s first round score of 61 set a new course record at Indian Hills, and is currently lowest round to date in the nation. Bradley took first place overall after carding a 21-under par 192 (63-65-64).
From there, the Red Storm went on to capture two more championships crowns, the Lacrosse Homes Intercollegiate (4/01/07) and the Princeton Invitational (04/15/07) titles. The last time St. John’s earned three team championships in a season was in 2001, which is also the last time the team made an appearance at the NCAA Championship.
The Red Storm finished in the top five in all six of its spring events. Overall for the year, St. John’s placed in the top five in 10 out of 12 tournaments with Bradley earning four individual championships. The junior has posted 10 top 10 finishes, taking the titles at The Tillinghast (Oct. 17, 2006), the UTSA Invitational (Oct. 24, 2006), the Treasure Coast Classic (March 9) and the Lacrosse Home Intercollegiate (April 1).
“This is the best team I have ever had,” said Darby. “They are very talented kids and the team chemistry is unbelievable.”
