QUEENS, N.Y. - Head Coach Jason Miller and the BIG EAST Conference have announced the Red Storm’s 2018 schedule on Tuesday. The schedule, consisting of 14 total games, eight home contests and six road contests, features a bevy of top competition in Division I lacrosse.
In addition to releasing the schedule, the BIG EAST has also announced that St. John’s will have a game featured on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) on Saturday, April 28 versus Georgetown.
St. John’s will take on three teams that competed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, a trio of conference champions in North Carolina, Denver (regular season), and Marquette (tournament), and seven schools who received at least a vote in the final USILA Coaches Poll last season.
For the second season in a row, the Red Storm will look to lean on its home crowd for eight games this season while hitting the road for six contests.
Following a pair of exhibitions versus Marist (Jan. 27) and at Fairfield (Feb. 3), St. John’s will open its season for the fourth-consecutive season against former BIG EAST rival Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Scarlet Knights, who finished 12th in the final 2017 USILA Coaches Poll, will host the Johnnies at High Point Solutions Stadium for the third time in the previous four years.
The Johnnies will open up play at DaSilva Field the following weekend as the University of Hartford comes to Queens for a showdown on Saturday, Feb. 17. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2004, and St. John’s will look to keep its perfect record against the Hawks intact.
St. John’s will remain at home for the final game of February to host High Point University on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Red Storm and Panthers met for the first time last season in North Carolina as HPU will make its first trip to Queens this year.
The Red Storm will remain on the road with a weekday battle with Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia on Wednesday, March 7. This will be the third-consecutive season the Hawks and Johnnies have squared off.
As March rolls along, St. John’s will return to Queens for a three-game homestand.
First, the Johnnies will host Siena College on Saturday, March 10. Last season, St. John’s defeated Sienna, 13-12, in Loudonville, N.Y. on Joe Madsen’s game-winning goal with just 27 seconds remaining. The Red Storm will look for its third-straight win over Sienna.
For the first time in school history, St. John’s will take on Dartmouth for a St. Patrick’s Day showdown at DaSilva Field. The Big Green finished last season with a 2-11 mark and 0-6 record in Ivy League play.
St. John’s rounds out the homestand with a home contest with local-rival Hofstra on Saturday, March 24. Hofstra, who finished last season ranked in the top-16, defeated the Red Storm last season, 9-6, in a defensive battle. As always, the tilt will showcase some of the top local talent that Long Island has to offer on both sides of the field.
The next weekend, the Johnnies open up BIG EAST play, for the fourth-consecutive year, at Providence on Saturday, March 31. The Red Storm is a remarkable 15-2 all-time against the Friars, but will look to rebound from last season’s 15-6 loss.
Closing out the non-conference slate is another Long Island staple, Stony Brook. St. John’s will make the trek to “The Brook” on Tuesday, April 3 for a showdown under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
Swinging back into conference play, the Red Storm return to Queens to host the reigning BIG EAST Conference Tournament Champions, Marquette, on Saturday, April 7. The Golden Eagles advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago, and will look for their fifth-straight win over St. John’s.
For the final time in the regular season, St. John’s hits the road for a cross-country trip to the Mile High City to battle Denver on Saturday, April 14. The only school to ever claim the BIG EAST regular season championship, the Pioneers advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season.
The Red Storm wraps up its BIG EAST and regular season schedule with back-to-back home contests against long-time conference rivals Villanova and Georgetown on April 21 and 28, respectively. Villanova finished last season ranked in the top-20, and St. John’s will look for its second win over the Hoyas in the last three years. The regular season finale against Georgetown will also be carried live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
St. John’s vies to earn a top-four regular season finish in the BIG EAST standings, which will earn Coach Miller and his squad an appearance in the 2018 BIG EAST Championships. The top-four BIG EAST teams will converge on Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Penn. for the conference tournament semifinals and finals, set for May 3 and 5, respectively.
