QUEENS, N.Y. -

The BIG EAST Conference has released its preseason poll and the Red Storm finds itself slotted third; the highest preseason conference selection for the Red Storm in program history, and Kieran McArdle was recognized as the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

McArdle and senior captain Dillon Ayers were unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selections; marking the first time St. John’s has placed multiple student-athletes on the preseason all-conference team.

A Ronkonkoma, N.Y. native, McArdle emerged onto the national scene during the 2012 season totaling 28 goals, 32 assists and 60 points on the year, which all were the highest totals for a Red Storm player since the program was reinstated in 2005. McArdle led the BIG EAST in points (3.77) and assists (2.00) per game during the 2012 regular season and finished the year ranked 10th nationally in points and sixth in assists. He joined Ayers as the first two All-BIG EAST selections in school history and was also the first St. John’s USILA All-American honoree since 1986 with his Honorable Mention recognition.

McArdle enters the 2013 season just one point shy of 100 with a career 49 goals and 50 assists and is only the sixth player in St. John’s history to join the 40-goal, 40-assist club. He becomes the first player in school history to be named preseason conference player of the year.

The heartbeat of the Red Storm, Ayers, earned his second-consecutive Preseason All-BIG EAST selection. The long stick midfielder was a unanimous choice in 2013 after picking up 65 groundballs and causing 17 turnovers in 2012. Ayers, of Lynbrook, N.Y., was the first St. John’s player ever selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad last season. The honor continues a string of accolades for Ayers, as he became the third Red Storm player ever chosen in the Major League Lacrosse Draft last week.

The Red Storm earned a third-place preseason selection, placed behind 2012 NCAA quarterfinalist Notre Dame and BIG EAST Champion Syracuse, after winning eight games and going 3-3 in conference play during last year’s slate. The eight wins were the most since program reinstatement in 2005. The Red Storm advanced all the way to the inaugural BIG EAST Lacrosse Championship game against Syracuse. St. John’s knocked off then-No.2 Notre Dame 8-7 in the semifinals, marking the highest-ranked opponent the Red Storm had defeated in program history.

St. John’s returns 27 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year’s successful core. The Red Storm opens the season on Saturday, February 16 at Holy Cross with faceoff set for noon.
