QUEENS, N.Y. - The BIG EAST Conference announced its 2018 Preseason Coaches' Poll and All-BIG EAST selections on Wednesday afternoon, highlighted by sophomore defenseman Pat Smyth being named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Smyth, one of 19 student-athletes awarded to the conference's preseason honor, finished last season as the anchor for the Red Storm defense. During his rookie campaign, the Springfield, Pa., native helped the Johnnies slow down the high-octane offenses of No. 6/8 Syracuse and No. 5/7 Hofstra. Smyth also started all 14 games for the Red Storm, collecting 26 ground balls and forcing 11 turnovers.
St. John's was selected sixth in the coaches' poll, following a 2017 campaign in which the Red Storm finished in the sixth-place spot.
Four-time defending regular season champion, Denver, was selected as the favorite in the conference with five first-place votes, while Villanova also garnered a first-place tally and is predicted to finish second. Providence (16 points, 3rd), back-to-back conference tournament champion Marquette (14 points, 4th), Georgetown (9 points, 5th), and St. John's (5 points, 6th) rounded out the remaining spots in the poll.
The Pioneers were also awarded preseason selections on the both the offensive and defensive side of the ball as Ethan Walker and Trevor Baptiste were named Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively.
St. John's opens the season on Saturday, Feb. 10 when the Red Storm travel to Piscataway, N.J. to battle Rutgers. The Johnnies have eight games at DaSilva Memorial Field this season, hosting marquee opponents Hofstra, Marquette, and Villanova.
