St. John's Armed Forces Appreciation Day Commemorative Uniform
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's lacrosse team's rivalry with Hofstra will take on a new meaning this spring as the contest between the squads will be centered around Armed Forces Appreciation Day.
"We've been interested in fostering local rivalry games since we got here. Sports are at their best when the local rivalries are good, so to add that element to the Hofstra vs. St. John's lacrosse game benefits us all," said Head Coach Jason Miller. "I'm grateful we can do it in a way that spreads the benefit to a greater cause. Giving back is the core belief of our university, and I know Seth [Tierney] and the folks at Hofstra are committed to do that too. Supporting our wounded warriors has had a special meaning for me dating back to my time at West Point. We're proud to have a chance to recognize those heroes, and contribute to their cause."
The National Guard has also partnered with St. John's to display a military presence at the event.
Both schools, along with their respective athletics sponsors (Under Armour and Warrior Lacrosse) have designed special military themed uniforms to be used during the rivalry clash. After the game, the uniforms will be auctioned off to fans with all proceeds going to Wounded Warrior Project's philanthropic campaign.
In addition to the special military appreciation uniforms, it is encouraged that fans in attendance provide donations for the cause.
The game is set for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, March 26 and will be the 18th meeting all-time between the programs.
Proceeds from the game will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
