QUEENS, N.Y. – Graduate Jeff Lowman of the St. John’s men’s lacrosse team has been selected by the BIG EAST Conference as one of 24 winners of the 2012-13 Big East Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. To be eligible for the awards the 24 recipients had to have attained junior academic standing and posted a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Lowman, St. John’s all-time saves leader, earned second-team BIG EAST distinction for the second-straight season in his final year with the Red Storm, finishing the 2013 regular season slate with a 9-2 record. His winning percentage was the best of any goalie with at least two starts in BIG EAST play and the Millersville, Md. Native finished second in the conference at 12.75 saves per game.
Lowman amassed 613 saves with a 55.7 percent save percentage over his four-year career at St. John’s and notched a career-high 19 saves in the Red Storm’s upset of then No. 7/6-ranked Hofstra on March 19.
With Lowman between the pipes for all but two games this past season, the Red Storm (9-4, 3-3) notched its most wins since program reinstatement in 2005 and the second most in St. John’s lacrosse history. Only the 1992 St. John’s lacrosse team topped this past season’s win total with a 10-5 campaign and no other team has won more than eight games in 24 total season of St. John’s lacrosse.
This year’s winners of the 2012-13 Big East Scholar-Athlete Excellence Awards included four student-athletes who were chosen to the Capital One Academic All-America teams in the 2012-13 season and six who were either chosen as BIG EAST Players of the Year or earned the top individual honors at their respective conference championship in 2012-13.
