BIG EAST Championship Rematch Of St. John's And Syracuse To Be Part Of The Whitman's® Sampler® Independence Classic|
Nov. 15, 2012
QUEENS, N.Y. -
The rematch of last year's inaugural BIG EAST Lacrosse Championship will take place at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. as St. John's and Syracuse meet as part of the Whitman's® Sampler® Independence Classic on March 9, 2013.
"We are excited to be a part of the Whitman's® Sampler® Independence Classic, and are grateful to Inside Lacrosse for the opportunity to once again participate in one of their marquee events," said head coach Jason Miller. "I've heard great things about PPL Park, and look forward to mixing it up with the Orange on that type of stage."
The Red Storm will look to avenge a pair of tough losses against the Orange in 2012. A late Syracuse goal halted St. John's upset hopes in a 9-8 home loss early in the season. The two teams met once again in the BIG EAST Championship game as Syracuse continued its strong finish to the season with a 12-4 victory over St. John's.
The Red Storm's inclusion in the Whitman's® Sampler® Independence Classic marks the third straight year St. John's has taken part in an Inside Lacrosse signature event after St. John's was featured in the Konica Minolta Big City Classic at MetLife Stadium the past two seasons.
The first-ever Whitman's® Sampler® Independence Classic will be a tripleheader event featuring six formidable lacrosse programs. St. John's and Syracuse open up the day's slate with faceoff scheduled for noon. The 2:30 p.m. matchup pits two Philadelphia rivals against each other as the University of Pennsylvania will battle Villanova University. The final game will begin at 5 p.m. and pairs a couple of lacrosse programs on the rise as Penn State draws Lehigh University.
The announcement of the Whitman's® Sampler® Independence Classic by Inside Lacrosse ran in conjunction with the renewal of last year's first-ever Whitman's® Sampler® Mile High Classic in Denver, Co.
"We're excited to announce these two signature events for lacrosse fans to experience. Our ability to continually deliver memorable experiences is due to the support of Whitman's® Sampler® and other great partners," said Andy Bilello, Associate Publisher at Inside Lacrosse. "There are many sports sponsorship options, but few that offer a fresh approach like lacrosse. The energy and enthusiasm that the Whitman's® Sampler® brand brings to the sport is contagious. We are appreciative that Whitman's® Sampler® has made a two-year commitment to these events. This gives us the opportunity to firmly establish these events as annual traditions for lacrosse fans."
