QUEENS, N.Y. -
Head lacrosse coach Jason Miller has officially announced the schedule for the 2013 season as the Red Storm will look to navigate through a challenging slate of games and make a return trip to the BIG EAST Lacrosse Championship. The 2013 schedule features 13 regular season games, six to be played at DaSilva Memorial Field as well as three neutral site contests that will showcase the St. John’s lacrosse program in new and exciting venues.
“We are excited about how the 2013 schedule has shaped up,” said Miller. “We continue to challenge ourselves both inside the BIG EAST and out of conference, culminating in what is as competitive of a schedule as there is in Division I.”
The Red Storm will once again face a top-flight group of opponents in 2013 as four of the 13 teams begin the season ranked in the Inside Lacrosse poll.
St. John’s lacrosse will also be featured in one of Inside Lacrosse’s signature events as it will battle Syracuse in the first-ever Whitman’s® Sampler® Independence Classic at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. after playing in the Konica-Minolta Big City Classic each of the last two seasons. The Whitman’s® Sampler® Independence Classic will be a tripleheader event with the rematch of the inaugural 2012 BIG EAST Lacrosse Championship between the Red Storm and the Orange to begin the festivities.
The Red Storm will take part in another neutral site BIG EAST matchup when it takes on the Georgetown Hoyas in The Battle of Bethpage at Bethpage High School. The Long Island showdown will allow many of the St. John’s players to compete in their own backyard as a sizeable portion of the roster hails from the area.
“We are really excited about the additional exposure we will receive as participants in the Whitman’s® Sampler® Independence Classic as well as The Battle of Bethpage,” said Miller. “Those will both be big stages for us and should add a little extra incentive to what are already huge BIG EAST matchups.”
St. John’s will compete in three separate exhibition matchups during the preseason as it prepares for regular season action. The Red Storm will take the field for the first time in 2013 against the University of Massachusetts at DaSilva Memorial Field at noon on Saturday, Jan. 26.
