Sept. 1, 2017
QUEENS, N.Y. - Taking on a preseason conference favorite for the second-straight game, the St. John's Red Storm dropped a 1-0 decision to reigning Atlantic 10 Champion Fordham on Friday night at Belson Stadium.
The Rams (1-1-1) converted on the game's lone goal in the 68th minute, as Janos Loebe buried a feed from Matthew Lewis in the back of the net after a Red Storm (1-2-0) defensive miscue gave the reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year an open look in front.
Andrew Withers made a season-high five stops for the Johnnies against a potent Rams offensive attack.
Matt Forster registered the game's first scoring chance in the ninth minute, sending a free kick from 15 yards outside the box toward the top left corner of the cage. Fordham goalkeeper Rashid Nuru neutralized the threat, punching it over the bar at the last second and keeping St. John's off the board.
Despite a back-and-forth half in terms of momentum, Fordham held a decisive advantage in first-half shots, firing off seven chances to the Red Storm's one. Withers was at the top of his game in the opening period; however, stopping all four Fordham tries on target.
One of the Red Storm's best opportunities of the game came in the 51st minute, as Andrea Previati possessed the ball to the right of the keeper with no defenders around him, but the tough angle prevented the redshirt junior from converting and the sides remained scoreless.
Shortly after the Rams scored, the Johnnies swung the momentum back in their favor, firing off four consecutive shots that narrowly missed their target.
Despite a late push by the Red Storm in the closing minutes, the Rams prevailed with a 1-0 victory, their first against St. John's since 1990.
St. John's returns to action on Tuesday evening at Belson Stadium, hosting another local foe in Hofstra. The contest is set for 7:30 p.m. start and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app.
