Nov. 3, 2012
WASHINGTON - Taking the field in defense of its BIG EAST Tournament crown and searching for a fifth Semifinal appearance in the past seven seasons, No. 13/24 St. John's was eliminated in the Quarterfinals as No. 4/6 Georgetown held on for a 2-1 win. Tim Parker scored on a penalty kick to pace St. John's (10-4-4), while Rafael Diaz made two saves. Brandon Allen scored the game-winner to lead Georgetown (16-2-1) and Tomas Gomez made three saves.
"Georgetown is a big and physical team with some great offensive talent so we knew this would be a very tough match," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "We got a boost after getting the equalizer so early in the second half, but it was unfortunate to allow a pair of goals on set pieces and that was the difference today."
Georgetown had the first shot of the game as Allen missed high with a header in the 4th minute.
Following an off-target attempt by Steve Neumann in the 12th minute, the Hoyas quickly regained possession. Tom Skelly then fired a shot on goal in the 13th minute and Diaz made the save before Neumann fired a rebound attempt high.
St. John's followed with its first shot on goal in the 20th minute, but a header from Andres Vargas was saved by Gomez.
Georgetown, however, took advantage of a Red Storm foul and used the ensuing free kick to go up 1-0 in the 26th minute. Neumann took the 25-yard free kick and curled it towards the upper right corner, where it skimmed the bottom of the crossbar and went past the goal line.
A shot by Jack Bennett went wide in the 32nd minute before a Hoya turnover created another opportunity for the Red Storm in the 34th minute, but a shot by Brandon Savino skipped just wide of the left post.
St. John's played short on its first corner kick attempt in the 39th minute, but could not connect on a pass into the box. Bennett later fired wide in the 44th minute and Georgetown took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Red Storm found the equalizer just minutes into the second half. After Daniel Herrera missed just high with a volley in the 47th minute, Parker buried a penalty kick in the 48th minute to level the score at 1-1. St. John's was awarded the penalty kick after a takedown in the box and Parker converted with a blast past Gomez.
The Hoyas followed with a pair of shots in the 57th minute, but both efforts from Allen were blocked by the defense.
Another free kick, however, helped Georgetown retake a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute. The initial free kick was saved by Diaz, but the rebound was controlled by the Hoyas and a pass from Jimmy Nealis found Allen for the go-ahead goal.
While the Hoyas were held without a shot for the remainder of the game, St. John's continued to attack as Vargas had a shot saved by Gomez in the 77th minute before an effort from Danny Bedoya was blocked in the 79th minute.
St. John's had two final chances for the equalizer in the closing minutes. After the Red Storm worked the ball from the back line and up through the left flank, Sean Sepe streaked into the box for a shot on goal that was saved by Gomez in the 89th minute. St. John's regained possession and used a forward pass to setup a quick strike down the right flank, but a pass into the box was cleared by the defense and Georgetown held on for the 2-1 win.
St. John's now awaits a potential at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament. The Selection Show airs live on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12.
