August 31, 2001, Bloomington, Ind. - The #11 ranked St. John's men's soccer opened their 2001 campaign with a rousing 2-1 upset win over #4 ranked Indiana in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Indiana University.
Timothy O'Neill and Jeff Matteo scored first half goals just two minutes apart and that would be all the Red Storm (1-0) needed to hold on for the win over a game Hoosiers squad in the season opener for both teams.
"Anytime you can beat a good team, especially a perennial power like Indiana on the road its a great victory," St. John's head coach Dave Masur said. "We know its just the beginning of the season and we'll take this win in stride and prepare for a tough Butler team on Saturday."
The Red Storm put its first goal up on the board with just over 14 minutes to play. St. John's O'Neill (on a perfect feed from Shalrie Joseph at 30:59) put a header past diving IU goalkeeper Colin Rogers for a 1-0 lead. And, just minutes later (32:23), Matteo drilled a ball from about 40 feet out sending it just over the fingertips of Rogers. The half closed with the frustrated Hoosiers
(0-1)heading to the lockerroom after having been outshot 7-2 in the first 45 minutes of play.
"This was two different halves for us," said Indiana Head Coach Jerry Yeagley. "We watched the first half and played the second. I credit St. John's. They are a good team and took advantage of our play in the early part of the game."
St. John's goalkeeper Guy Hertz played well in his first Division I start to record the victory. SJU faces Butler at 5:00 p.m. EST in the second day of competition in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Saturday, September 1 in
