Kelly’s Heroics Leads St. John’s Past Georgetown, 3-0

JAMAICA, N.Y. – Junior Ryan Kelly (Marlton, N.J.) had been waiting for a night like this one. Since transferring to St. John’s this year, Kelly has been waiting for a breakout night.

He got it on Saturday night, scoring two second half goals to lead St. John’s to a 3-0 win over Georgetown in a BIG EAST men’s soccer match in front of 1,187 at Belson Stadium.

The win, St. John’s third-straight, improves the Red Storm to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas fall to 2-1-2 and 0-1 in league play.

“I’ve been waiting for a night like this where I could break out of my shell a bit,” Kelly said. “It was a tough first few games, but I’ve been working to get more fit and to do it on a night like this, with a big crowd and all of our students here, it made it a lot of fun.”

The Red Storm had several chances in the early minutes of the game. In the fourth minute of play, junior Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) sent a pass from the part side of the box to classmate Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.), whose shot from 18 yards out went wide. A corner kick from Angel Rodriguez put pressure in the box, but senior Matia Damiani missed on a header opportunity. Groenwald had another shot, a high-arcing shot from 25 yards out that Hogan was able to settle under and save.

The Red Storm finally broke through in the 13th minute. A foul by Hoyas defender Tim Convey resulted in a free kick for St. John’s just outside the box. Senior Simone Salinno (Lucera, Italy) had his shot from 24 yards out bounce off the wall slightly and went past Hogan to the lower far post, giving St. John’s a 1-0 lead at 12:51.

In the second half, it was the Kelly Show, as the Red Storm’s junior transfer (from Virginia) scored two goals and brought the student section to life behind the Georgetown goal.

In the 63rd minute, Kelly took a throw-in from junior Chris Leidner (Greenlawn, N.Y.), dribbled along the 22-yard line with open space, settled the ball and beat Hogan to the lower near post.

Eight minutes later, the junior added his second goal of the season. Freshman forward Ashley Kozicki (Pleasant Valley, Pa.) picked up a loose ball near midfield and sent a pass over two Hoya defenders. Kelly held back to prevent from going offsides, settled the ball and found himself one-on-one with Hogan. Kelly’s shot from 16 yards out beat Hogan to the lower near post at 71:06, giving St. John’s a 3-0 lead.

St. John’s kept on coming, with Kozicki taking two shots and Corcoran one during an 11-second span. The team’s fourth goal, by Kozicki, was called back after an offsides ruling, and a shot from Kelly in the 81st minute was saved by Hogan.

The Red Storm, who have scored nine goals in the last three games, out shot Georgetown 19-2, including 10-1 in shots on goal, and had five corner kicks to the Hoyas’ one.

Graduate student Guy Hertz (Ramat-Hasharon, Israel) picked up his third-straight win, making one save in 82 minutes before junior Reed Dailey (Alpharetta, Ga.) was substituted.

St. John’s continues its four-game homestand on Wednesday, September 17 at Belson Stadium with a match against Villanova. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m.
