JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. John’s Athletics Marketing Staff dubbed Saturday’s game “Keep Out the Orange” night, referring to the Red Storm men’s soccer opponent, Syracuse. Had they known, they would have called it “Roomies” night.
No. 9 St. John’s scored two second half goals en route to a 3-0 win over the Orangemen in front of 1,237 fans at Belson Saturday night. The goals came from a trio of players who all live together on the Queens campus, one each from seniors Simone Salinno (Lucera, Italy) and Matia Damiani (Foggia, Italy) and the final goal from sophomore Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph (Gothenburg, Sweden). “I think there might have been some chores at home,” Damiani said jokingly with his roommates after the game. “It was a good result for us, and we feel good. We really worked hard tonight and we had good pressure up front that created some chances for us.” The Red Storm improve to 5-2-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the league, while the Orangemen fall to 2-3-0 and 0-1-1 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm came out quickly and attacked Syracuse from the start. Salinno blasted home a shot from 15 yards out, beating Syracuse goalkeeper Alim Karim to the lower near post, giving St. John’s an early lead. The first shot for the Red Storm came from Red Storm freshman Ashley Kozicki (Pleasant Valley, Pa.), whose blast from in front of the box was saved by Karim. The ball deflected off of Karim and went toward the end line, where St. John’s junior Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.) took control. He crossed the ball through traffic to Salinno at the top of the box, and the Italian import’s shot was good at 6:54. St. John’s had other chances in the first half, but could not tally another goal, taking a 1-0 lead at the break, while holding a 7-1 advantage in shots. The Orangemen appeared to have a shot to tie the game early in the 56th minute after at throw-in on the far sideline just beyond midfield. Frank Bruno picked up a loose ball near the 35-yard line, dribbled toward the St. John’s goal and his shot, the Orangemen’s lone shot on goal all game, from 25 yards out was saved by Red Storm goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.). The Red Storm, meanwhile, continued to press the offensive end. It finally paid off in the 68th minute. A St. John’s attempt was cleared and a Syracuse defender was passing the ball back to the keeper. Karim slipped in his attempt to pick up the ball, and Damiani sprinted toward the ball and flicked it into the goal, giving St. John’s a 2-0 lead at 68:20. Six minutes later, St. John’s maintained control after another corner kick – the Red Storm took seven corners and held Syracuse to none for the game – and increased the lead to 3-0 on a goal from Alvarado-Ralph. Junior Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) crossed the ball to Ralph in the box, and his header sailed over the head of Alim, giving the Red Storm a three-goal lead at 74:18. St. John’s out shot Syracuse, 13-2, and took seven shots on goal, while limiting the Orangemen to just one shot on goal.
