QUEENS, N.Y. -
After helping lead St. John's to a pair of shutouts as part of a 1-0-1 week in conference action, Jack Bennett was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and Rafael Diaz was selected to the Weekly Honor Roll. The conference accolades are already the third of the season for both Bennett and Diaz. Bennett has been selected to the Weekly Honor Roll twice, while Diaz has been named Goalkeeper of the Week once and has been a Weekly Honor Roll selection once.
The pair helped anchor the defensive efforts as St. John's played to a 0-0 draw with Villanova (Oct. 3) before recording a 3-0 win against Cincinnati (Oct. 6). While helping the defense post the pair of clean sheets, Bennett also converted a penalty kick for the game-winning goal against the Bearcats. Diaz, meanwhile, tied a season-high with six saves against Wildcats before adding one stop against the Bearcats to post his second and third-straight shutouts.
St. John's (8-1-4, 2-1-1) currently ranks second in the league with a 0.58 goals against average and is tied for second with seven shutouts.
Bennett and teammate Nick Matthews are both tied for third with three game-winners on the year, while Bennett also ranks tied for ninth in assists (4) and tied for tenth in points (12). Diaz is tied for first in shutouts (7), tied for second in goals against average (0.58) and ranks third in save percentage (.846).
St. John's returns to action on Oct. 13, traveling to Louisville for a 7 p.m. matchup that will air nationally on FOX Soccer.
