02/02/2012 Red Storm Opens Season With Division II DoubleheaderSt. John's returns five and welcomes four talented newcomers to 2012 squad. A NCAA Champion and former ITA All-American, Omar Altmann joined the St. John's men's tennis program in the summer of 2011, as he was hired as head coach Eric Rebhuhn's graduate assistant coach. Prior to joining the Red Storm, Altmann had a remarkable playing career at tennis powerhouse Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., and was recently inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Waves' 2006 NCAA National Championship squad. As a freshman, Altmann played No. 6 singles on the championship team, going 4-0 during the event and being named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team for both singles and doubles. Altmann also reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA singles tournament and the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket in 2009. Altmann, the 2009 West Coast Conference Player of the Year, a two-time ITA All-American and four-year member of the All-West Coast Conference squad in both singles and doubles, compiled a career singles record of 97-40 and a career doubles mark of 102-35 with the Waves. Following his senior season, Altmann reached an ITA national singles ranking of No. 36 and worked his way up to the No. 8 doubles team in the country. At Pepperdine, he was also named the male "Wave of the Year" in 2009 for spirit and service to the athletic program. Born in Cairo, Egypt, Altmann was ranked as Egypt's No. 1 player at the under-14, under-16 and under-18 divisions. Altmann graduated from Pepperdine with a bachelor's degree in international business in 2009, and is currently pursuing a master's of business administration in finance at St. John's.
