GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The St. John’s men’s tennis team wrapped up its first ITA Kick-Off Weekend appearance by losing to South Alabama, 7-0, in the consolation round on Sunday morning in Gainesville.
The Red Storm took early leads in doubles action led by classmates Valentin Mihai and Mike Lampa before falling to the Jaguars’ Alex Bernard and Shayann Vaezzadeh, 8-5.
Lampa then made some noise in singles play competing in the No. 2 position for the first time this season. After dropping a tough tiebreaker in the first set, the New Jersey native claimed the second set 6-3 and then lost the third, 10-4.
The Red Storm returns to Queens on Friday, Feb. 1, when No. 56 St. John’s takes on No. 28 Harvard at the National Tennis Center in the first home match of the spring season.
