NEW YORK, N.Y.– The St. John’s men’s tennis team continued its stellar fall season play at the Columbia Classic this weekend where freshman Freddy Ruiz Acevedo and sophomore R.J. Del Nunzio each won their singles flights, marking the second time this year that two Red Storm singles players won titles at the same tournament.
Del Nunzio, the No. 2 seed in the top singles flight, topped opponents from NJIT, UT Arlington, and Farleigh Dickinson all in straight sets en route to his appearance in the finals. The New York, N.Y. native capped his return home with a 6-3, 6-5(3) win over Columbia’s Bert Vancura to clinch the title.
Ruiz Acevedo got his weekend started with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Blake Niehaus of Dartmouth and a straight set victory over Chris Sabitais of host Columbia to advance to the semifinals. The freshman then went on to top two opponents from NJIT to claim the Flight C championship.
The two singles titles are the first for both players in their St. John’s careers. At the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational (Sept. 13-15), sophomore Vaidik Munshaw and senior Gary Kushnirovich each took home flight championships, the first time since 1999 that St. John’s saw two players take home two titles from a tournament.
The Red Storm will be back in action at the 2013 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional in New Haven, Conn. on Oct. 17-22.
