QUEENS, N.Y. - Looking to rebound from back-to-back losses, the St. John’s men’s tennis team returns to Flushing Meadows on Saturday to battle Middle Tennessee State at the National Tennis Center at 8 p.m.
The Red Storm (1-2) ventured onto the road for the first time this season last weekend, dropping a pair of matches to Dartmouth, 4-0, and Buffalo, 4-3.
During Sunday’s loss versus the Bulls, the Johnnies claimed the opening match in doubles play, with Igor Maslov and Alan Nunez Aguilera rolling to a 6-2 win at No. 3, but a loss from the No. 2 spot moved all eyes to the top position. There, Luka Sucevic and Dusan Vukicevic gave St. John’s the much-needed point in doubles play with a 7-5 victory.
Moving into singles play, St. John’s took a 2-0 lead in the match when Ognjen Trejgut swept his opponent from the No. 5 hole, 6-4, 6-3, however, Buffalo rallied with four-consecutive wins to take the match.
Aguilera finished the tough weekend on a positive note, winning at the No. 2 position in a thrilling, three-set match 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6 to bring the final score to 4-3.
Middle Tennessee State enters the weekend with a 6-1 mark and an early 1-0 record in Conference USA play. The Blue Raiders are coming off a pair of victories over UTSA and Tennessee State last weekend, and have claimed wins in each of their previous four matches.
Saturday’s bout will be the lone of the weekend for St. John’s. The Johnnies will continue their four-game homestand next Friday against Wagner at 9:30 a.m.
