QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a 2018 campaign that saw the teams finish combined record of 31-12, the St. John's men's and women's tennis programs each earned a spot in the Oracle ITA Regional Collegiate Tennis Rankings earlier this month.
Capturing the BIG EAST Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the squad's history, the Red Storm women's tennis team finishes the season with a ninth-place ranking by the ITA. The selection marks the second appearance in the regional rankings for the Johnnies since the ITA began sorting by region in 2008.
Joining the team rankings is standout sophomore Jessica Livianu, who finishes the season ranked fifth in the Northeast Region for singles play. The back-to-back BIG EAST Player of the Year ended her 2018 campaign with a 16-2 record during dual-match play, and over her two-year career, Livianu has accumulated an overall record of 34-4 and a perfect 17-0 against conference foes. The Brooklyn native advanced to the NCAA DI Individual Singles Championships for the second-consecutive season last month.
On the men's side, the Red Storm remained a fixture in the rankings as the squad finishes the dual-match season ranked 10th in the Northeast region by the ITA. This marks the eighth-straight year the men's program has been ranked in the poll. The Johnnies reached double figures in wins for the fifth-consecutive season with a 14-6 record and reached the semifinals of the BIG EAST Conference Championships for the fourth time over the last five tries.
The pairing of Luka Sucevic and Alan Nunez Aguilera also earned recognition from the ITA as the duo ranked 10th in the Northeast region for doubles competition. During dual-match play, the pair dropped only one match this season playing on the top court and collected victories over Fordham, Siena, Saint Francis (Pa.), Brown, Temple, Xavier, and Marquette.
