QUEENS, N.Y. – After a season in which the St. John’s men’s tennis team caught fire in the BIG EAST Championship to capture fifth place, the Red Storm’s third consecutive top-five finish in the conference, head coach Eric Rebhuhn and his squad will begin the 2013-14 season at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13, in Princeton, N.J.
Following the Farnsworth, St. John’s will send players to either New Haven, Conn. for the Ivy Plus Invitational (Sept. 20-22) or the USTA Men’s College Invitational at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home court of the Red Storm.
“Everyone, including myself, is very excited for these upcoming tournaments,” said Rebhuhn. “We have a lot of old and new faces but together they show a lot of promise. Performing well this fall will be important if we want to succeed this spring.”
Rebhuhn has once again challenged his team with a tough non-conference schedule by pitting the Red Storm against six teams, George Washington, Columbia, Santa Clara, Cornell, Yale and Harvard, that finished last season ranked in the ITA Division I Rankings.
After St. John’s matchup with local rival Columbia on Feb. 22, the Red Storm will travel to the West Coast to participate in the prestigious Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship before matches against UC Santa Barbara (March 5), Cal Poly (March 6) and Santa Clara (March 9).
The St. John’s lineup will feature new faces in freshman Freddy Ruiz Acevedo, sophomores Vaidik Munshaw, Erick Reyes and R.J. Del Nunzio, junior Lucas Hejhal and senior Gary Kushnirovich. Del Nunzio, a native of New York, N.Y., returns home after spending his freshman year at Oklahoma State. Reyes joins the Red Storm after spending two seasons at Wichita State where he helped the Shockers win the Missouri Valley Conference Championship last spring. The lone returner from last year’s senior-laden squad is sophomore Michael-John Every, who will bring depth and experience to the young squad.
