St. John's Men's Tennis Ready ITA Northeast Regional Championships|

QUEENS, N.Y. - As the weather grows colder, the St. John's men's tennis team is ready to championship season as the Johnnies compete in the 2017 ITA Regional Championships presented by Oracle. The Red Storm will head to New Haven, Conn. to compete in the Northeast Regional at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale.
This will be the first of two visits to Yale for St. John's as the Johnnies will compete in the Connecticut State Championships just a few weeks following this week's events.
All competitors will look to qualify for the upcoming ITA National Championships in November, a goal for each member of the St. John's team.
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country.
The annual tournament also serves as a qualifier, with the finalists in singles and the winner in doubles gaining automatic entry into the ITA Fall National Championships in early November. The tournament traditionally begins with qualifying singles on the first day, followed by main draw action for the next four days, and concluding with the championship matches on the final day.
Sophomore Ognjen Trejgut will begin action for the Johnnies on Wednesday, competing the in qualifying singles tournament. The Belgrade, Serbia native will take on Dyan Foo-Kune of St. Francis in the opening round. Trejgut must win two matches in order to move into the singles tournament.
Four Johnnies have already qualified for the major singles tournament: Junior Luka Sucevic, junior Andrei Crapcenco, junior Dusan Vukicevic, and junior Alan Nunez Aguilera. All four have been split into different groups of eight.

On the doubles side, St. John's will send a pair of teams to compete in the first and third quarters of the tournament.
