NEW YORK - The St. John's University women's basketball team defeated Villanova, 65-55, at Madison Square Garden Saturday afternoon. The St. John's victory snapped a seven-game Wildcat win streak in the series and propelled the Red Storm to its best conference start since the 1990-91 season at 5-2. St. John's remains unbeaten at home in 2005-06 with a perfect 7-0 record.

Kia Wright led all scorers with a season-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The junior guard put together her best performance of the season in leading the Red Storm (15-3, 5-2 BIG EAST) to its second-ever win at Madison Square Garden.

Wright got help from many teammates, as Greeba Barlow had 13 points, four assists and five rebounds and Angela Clark just missed notching a double-double with 11 rebounds and nine points. Senior Danielle Chambers, meanwhile, dominated the boards with a team-high 13 rebounds to go with four points.

The first half was closely contested and low-scoring. Wright got St. John's on the board with a 3-pointer in the opening minute and finished the half with seven points. The score was tied at 15 at the three-minute mark when freshman Monique McLean, who earned her first start in a St. John's uniform, knocked down a jump shot to give the Red Storm a two-point lead.

Villanova guard Betsy McManus put Villanova up by one point less than a minute later with a 3-pointer, but St. John's scored the final five points of the half to take a 22-18 lead into the locker room.

St. John's built its lead to 15 points in the second half, and maintained its composure down the stretch to finish off the Wildcats by the final score of 65-55.

McLean finished with nine points and also grabbed three rebounds, while Tara Walker netted seven points and also had three boards.

Villanova was led by Jackie Adamshick with 16 points and McManus with 13 points and four assists.

St. John's hits the road for a Wednesday game at Providence. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
