QUEENS, N.Y. - Joy McCorvey posted a double-double and Eugeneia McPherson added 12 points to lead the St. John's women's basketball team to a 70-46 victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. With the win, the Red Storm improves to 18-3, 6-2 BIG EAST and extends its winning streak to five games. With the loss, the Friars drop to 12-9, 3-5 BIG EAST. It was an overall team effort in the win, as seven STJ players scored six points or more and six players grabbed four or more rebounds. The Red Storm was strong in the paint, scoring 30 points while holding Providence to only 16. St. John's bench was another key to victory, as it accounted for 27 points while the Friars' reserves were held to nine points. The Red Storm defense was stingy in the game, holding Providence to a 26.2 percent field goal percentage in the contest while allowing only one Friar player to reach double figures in scoring. McCorvey posted her fourth double-double of the year with a 12-point, 12-rebound performance. The senior was highly-effective from the field, going 6-of-9, and she added two assists, one block and three steals in the contest. McPherson got off to a strong start in the game, scoring 10 of her career-high 12 points in the opening frame. The freshman finished the contest 4-of-6 from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 effort from 3-point range. Providence opened the contest with a 15-9 lead, but the Red Storm responded when McCorvey converted a layup to spark a 10-0 run that put STJ in front 19-15. After the Friars quickly regained the lead, 20-19, the teams traded baskets until Sky Lindsay hit a jumper to key a 15-2 run that gave the Red Storm a 36-24 lead at the half. The Red Storm continued to surge out of the break, going on a 12-2 run to open the second half and take a 20-point advantage, 46-26, with 16:46 to go. St. John's offense did not slow down the remainder of the game and Providence could not close the gap as the Red Storm came away with the win. The Red Storm will open a two-game road trip on Tuesday when it travels to face Georgetown at 8 p.m.
