CINCINNATI – Coming off its first BIG EAST win of the season, the St. John’s women’s basketball team will head to Cincinnati, Ohio to battle Xavier on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center.
The contest, scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff, will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Mike Schmaltz and Rich Hoyte on the call.
After picking up a huge conference win over Creighton in overtime on Friday, the Red Storm (8-7, 1-3 BIG EAST) will search for its fifth-consecutive victory over Xavier (8-6, 1-2 BIG EAST).
In the triumph over the Bluejays, St. John’s was led by Tiana England’s first-career double-double as the redshirt freshman tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds. The 17 points matched a career high and England also recorded four rebounds and three steals.
Imani Littleton also had a big game for the Johnnies in the win, recording her first double-digit scoring effort of the season with 11 points. The senior narrowly missed her fourth-career double-double with nine rebounds.
Filling in for the injured Akina Wellere for the second-consecutive game, Qadashah Hoppie stepped up with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal in the winning effort. The 15 points cemented the first time the freshman has recorded at least 10 points in back-to-back games since November.
Sunday’s contest will be the seventh all-time meeting between the Red Storm and Musketeers with the Johnnies holding a 4-2 advantage in the series. St. John’s has also won the previous four games between the programs, and are 1-2 all-time at the Cintas Center.
Last season, St. John’s swept Xavier by beating the Musketeers twice in a span of 27 days. In the most recent meeting at Madison Square Garden, Littleton picked up 12 points and 11 rebounds through just three quarters of action against the Musketeers. The San Diego, Calif., native shot a perfect 6-of-6 in the contest and picked up five of her boards on the offensive glass.
Xavier enters Sunday’s meeting on the heels of back-to-back conference losses at Georgetown and at No. 21 Villanova. In their most recent contest at Villanova, the Musketeers were dominated in the third quarter as the Wildcats picked up a 75-57 win.
Jada Byrd led the Musketeers with 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting on Friday at Villanova. The senior guard also led the team in rebounds (4) and assists (3).
Following Sunday’s matchup, St. John’s embarks on the final tilt of a two-game road swing by battling Butler on Jan. 10 on FS2.
