Qadashah Hoppie Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year

Feb. 28, 2018

QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a stellar rookie season, Qadashah Hoppie has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday.

Additionally, Hoppie and Tiana England both earned unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, while Maya Singleton was tabbed to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.

Hoppie becomes the first St. John's player to be named the league's freshman of the year since Da'Shena Stevens, now an assistant coach with the Red Storm, won the award at the conclusion of the 2008-09 season. Hoppie is one of just three players in St. John's history to garner the accolade, joining Stevens and Ann Marie McNamee (1983).

The Staten Island native earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors four times over the course of the regular season, tied for the league lead in that category with England.

The freshman guard is averaging 10.8 points per game through 29 contests for the Red Storm and is tied for the team-lead in 3-point makes with 42.  The rookie finished conference play as the highest scoring freshman in the league with 11.1 points per game during BIG EAST play and was the only rookie to crack the top 30 in overall scoring.

Hoppie led the Red Storm in scoring eight times this season despite coming off the bench in 18 of her 29 appearances.

After missing all of last season with injury, England burst onto the scene in her first year of collegiate basketball. The redshirt freshman averaged 9.8 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game for the Johnnies, starting 27 of her 29 appearances on the season.  Recording double digits assists on three occasions, England finished the regular season ranked third overall in the BIG EAST with 5.3 helpers per outing.

During conference play, the 5-foot-7 guard led the league's rookies in both assists (4.7 per game) and steals (1.3 per game).  Additionally, England ranked second among BIG EAST freshmen in scoring with 9.1 points per contest during league action and was the only freshman to average more than 35 minutes per game.

Singleton has stuffed the stat sheet during her final run with the Red Storm, nearly doubling her output from her junior year in a number of statistical categories.

The senior leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 11.1 points and 11.1 boards per game.  During conference play, Singleton led the league with 10.8 caroms per outing.

A six-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection this season, Singleton is one of only two players in the conference currently averaging a double-double while her 16 double-doubles on the year rank 14th nationally.

The Indian Head, Md., native has recorded at least 15 rebounds in six games this season and ranks in the top-15 nationally in rebounds (323) and rebounds per game (11.1).  Additionally, the 6-foot forward is shooting 46.0 percent from the floor and averaging 1.72 steals per game.
