QUEENS, N.Y. - After finding out earlier this evening that it has locked in their 11th-straight postseason appearance, St. John’s women’s basketball team has learned that it will face off against Marist in the opening round of the WNIT on Thursday at Carnesecca Arena.
Game times for the first round will be announced by tournament officials on Tuesday, March 13, and will be posted on RedStormSports.com.
“Playing in the postseason is something we hold with very high respect in our program,” said St. John’s head coach Joe Tartamella. “This will be St. John’s 11th straight and it never gets any easier. We are proud to represent the BIG EAST against high level competition as we try to win a championship.”
The Red Storm is one of three BIG EAST teams to secure a spot in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament alongside Seton Hall and Georgetown. The fifth seed in this year’s BIG EAST Tournament, the Johnnies finished above both the Pirates and the Hoyas in the final regular season conference standings, placing inside the top half of the league ledger for the sixth-straight year in 2017-18.
2018 marks the Red Storm's sixth-ever trip to the WNIT and the program’s second in as many seasons. In four of the program’s previous five trips to the tournament, the Johnnies have reached the round of 16.
Last season, St. John’s advanced to round of 16 with victories over Sacred Heart and Harvard on their home court before falling to eventual champion Michigan, 60-40.
At the conclusion of regular-season conference play, the Johnnies led all BIG EAST teams in scoring defense (59.8 ppg), field goal defense (.399), and blocked shots (4.2 per game).
The Johnnies enter postseason play with an overall record of 16-14 after falling in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST tournament to fourth-seeded Creighto
Following the first round of play, round two games are set to take place March 17-20.
