QUEENS, N.Y. - For the 10th-consecutive year and the 12th time in the last 13 seasons, the St. John’s women’s basketball team will be making an appearance in the postseason. Following a regular-season that saw the program reach the 20-win mark for the fourth-straight year, the Red Storm has accepted a bid to play in the WNIT.
The Red Storm will open WNIT action on Friday, March 17, playing host to Sacred Heart at Carnesecca Arena at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The 2016-17 campaign marks the Red Storm’s fifth trip to the WNIT, with the program’s last appearance coming in 2015. That season marked the third time that the Johnnies advanced to the Round of 16 after beating Army and Fordham before falling to BIG EAST rival Villanova. The Red Storm also won two games in the WNIT in 2009 and 2008 after picking up one win in 2005, the program’s first appearance in the tournament.
The Red Storm enters the WNIT with an overall record of 20-11, having advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament for the fourth-straight year. St. John’s also reached the 20-win mark for the fourth year in a row.
St. John’s finished in a tie for fourth in the BIG EAST regular season standings, reaching double-digit wins in the conference for the eighth-straight year.
