May 29, 2012
"We are excited to welcome Priscilla Edwards to the St. John's University Women's Basketball family," remarked Tartamella. "Her experiences at St. Bonaventure under head coach Jim Crowley both as a player and coach have made her one of the top young up-and-coming assistants in our game. Priscilla has always shown a drive and passion for her craft and has strong ties to the New York area. She will be a valuable asset to our program and in the St. John's Community."
"Today is a very humbling and exciting day for me as I begin my duties here with the St. John's women's basketball program," Edwards said. "I thank coach Tartamella for giving me the opportunity to return home to New York City and join his program. I am truly looking forward to helping continue the Red Storm's successes both on and off the court. Coach Tartamella has had a major impact in the rise of this program and I am honored to be apart of his inaugural staff."
At St. John's, Edwards duties will include recruiting, player development and opponent scouting.
Edwards, a native of Harlem, N.Y., spent the last three seasons assisting head coach Jim Crowley at her alma mater St. Bonaventure. With the Bonnies, Edwards, a former guard for Crowley, was responsible for the organization and coordination of recruiting, game scouting and film breakdown, in addition to practice and game preparation. She also led the year-round preparation and execution of individual development workouts for both guards and post players. In 2011-12, Edwards was on staff for St. Bonaventure's historic run to the 2012 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. St. Bonaventure received its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth after earning an at-large big as the Atlantic 10 Tournament runner up. The 2011-12 Bonnies concluded the season with a program-best 31 victories and tied for the most in a single season by an Atlantic 10 Conference team. The Bonnies finished the season No. 21/23 in the national polls.
Edwards was Crowley's assistant from 2010-12, after spending the 2009-10 season as his Director of Basketball Operations. As the Director of Operations, Edwards assisted in the day-to-day management of the team, including program organization, travel and video exchange.
Edwards was a four-year letterwinner for the Bonnies under Crowley, concluding her career as part of the 2008-09 squad that won a then-program record 23 games and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2009 WNIT. Edwards finished her career with 881 points, 448 rebounds and 354 assists. Her assists total earned her the No. 5 slot on the Bonnies' all-time records.
Edwards earned her bachelor of arts degree in political science in 2008 from St. Bonaventure. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in counseling. Follow Edwards on Twitter: @STJ_CoachP.
The 2012-13 Red Storm squad returns four starters, eight letterwinners and 79 percent of its scoring from its 2011-12 team that posted a 24-10 overall record and advanced to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The 2011-12 Red Storm also enjoyed a No. 3 seed, a program best, and finished second in the BIG EAST Conference (13-3) after being picked to finish seventh in the league's preseason poll. St. John's defeated six ranked opponents and finished the season ranked No. 13/15 in the national polls.
