Aug. 20, 2014
ROME – Following a full-day tour that included a walk-through of the Vatican, the Red Storm joined together with the St. John’s University Rome Campus for a community service project at Termini Station.
After a full-day walking-tour of Rome, the Red Storm embarked on an educational journey that included a final guided tour of Italy before meeting up with the St. John’s University Rome Campus for an opportunity at the day’s service project.
The Red Storm gathered together with a member of the Rome campus to make sandwiches for the hungry as it distributed sandwiches throughout Termini Station to those in need.
Day three’s feature player is freshman Tamesha Alexander. Alexander had the opportunity to share with the Red Storm her experience as a freshman and give an inside look into what it means to be a member of the Red Storm.
Q: How did the nickname of ‘Sox’ come about?
A: When I was a kid playing basketball around nine or ten, I was inspired by older players from the 60’s or 70’s with the high, tube sox. Since then I thought that is how you were supposed to dress and I always wore the high socks and my Iverson sweat bands and since then I was known growing up as ‘Sox.”
Q: What does it mean to open up the season in Europe as a freshman?
A: Coming in as a freshman and going to Europe my first summer is a lot as far as cramming in practice time and going over plays. As a freshman it’s a lot. The experience is awesome and I know that not many people have experienced it, so I’m happy that St. John’s has awarded me this privilege to get out here and experience this weeks.
Q: What are you looking forward to for Wednesday’s game?
A: I’m looking forward to getting better as a team and continue building. I think we have a very special team this year. The future is just sky high for us and there are no limits for us as a team.
Q: How was your experience with the ‘Midnight Run’?
A: There was a point where there were two men at the train station. The older one, even though he wasn’t from America, said ‘God Bless America,’ and I thought that was so moving that he thought of us so highly.
