QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm men's and women's basketball teams held their annual Media Day at Taffner Field House on Wednesday, welcoming more than 50 reporters from the New York City area to the Queens campus. The media event provided an opportunity to discuss the upcoming season with men's head coach Norm Roberts, women's head coach Kim Barnes Arico and the players from both the men's and women's teams.

Roberts opened the day's events at a news conference where he spoke about the maturation of his seven man sophomore class, and how his team has prepared during the offseason.

"We have young guys that are a year older and are excited to get the season started," said Roberts. "They are working extremely hard to improve their games, their bodies and their strength."

Barnes Arico was next in the interview room, where she discussed her expectations for the upcoming season. The women's team finished 18-15 a year ago and reached the WNIT Quarterfinals.

"I am excited about this season," said Barnes Arico, now in her seventh year at St. John's. "We have a strong group of young ladies coming back and we have two freshmen that I think will make an immediate impact."

Following the coaches' new conferences, members of the media were invited to an interview session, where they engaged in question and answer periods with each member of the men's and women's teams.

After an exhibition game against the X All-Stars at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6, the women's team opens regular season play at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 at home against Northeastern as the first half of a double-header with the men's team. The men host LIU at 9 p.m. on Nov. 14 to open their season. Both contests will be televised on SportsNet New York (SNY).
