Joe Tartamella Announces Women's Basketball Staff Updates|
Nov. 6, 2017
Matt Bernstein, who served as the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations for the past two seasons, has been elevated to Director of Basketball Operations effective immediately. Additionally, former women’s basketball standout Shenneika Smith has signed on to be the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations.
“We are very happy to announce that Matt Bernstein will assume the role of Director of Basketball Operations after serving as Assistant Director the last two seasons,” Tartamella said. “He is a tireless worker and a valuable member of our staff.”
Bernstein began his career with St. John’s basketball as an undergraduate, serving as a student manager for Head Coach Norm Roberts. In the 2008-09 school year, Bernstein was promoted to the position of head student manager, overseeing a staff of 12 and taking on several important administrative responsibilities for the team. Following his graduation from St. John’s with a B.S. in sports management in May of 2009, Bernstein stayed on with the men’s basketball squad, becoming a graduate assistant for the next two seasons. During that time, Bernstein took on even greater administrative duties and also performed many video coordination responsibilities. In the middle of his two-year tenure as a graduate assistant, Bernstein was integral in facilitating the transition to a new coaching staff for the 2010-11 season, a campaign that saw the Red Storm make its first NCAA Tournament in nearly a decade. Bernstein graduated with a masters in sports management, focusing in coaching and leadership, the following January.
During his time as Assistant Director of Basketball Operations under Tartamella, Bernstein was responsible for overseeing the student managers and coordinated the game and practice video operation, among various administrative responsibilities.
Smith, who was St. John’s second-ever WNBA draft pick after being selected 25th overall by the New York Liberty in the 2013 draft, returns to the Red Storm after two years of professional basketball and seven seasons with the Jamaican National Team. Professionally, Smith spent time with the Liberty, Connecticut Suns, Quinta Dos Lombos (Portugal) and Uni Girona (Spain). Additionally, Smith led the Jamaican National Team to the 2014 FIBA Women CBC championship.
“Shenneika will be a great addition to our staff,” Tartamella added. “Being a former WNBA draft pick, First-Team All-BIG EAST player and alum translate into her bringing a wealth of experience to her position.”
While at St. John’s, Smith was one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history. Smith led the team in scoring in each of her final three seasons and was a 2013 WBCA All-America Honorable Mention, the 2012 All-Met Player of the Year, a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team pick and a two-time All-Met First Team honoree.
The St. John’s women’s basketball team kicks off the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10 when the Red Storm welcomes St. Francis Brooklyn to Carnesecca Arena for a 4:30 p.m. first tip on ESPN3. The game will be the first end of a doubleheader with the St. John’s men’s team, which will host New Orleans later that evening.
Season and individual tickets are available for all St. John's women's basketball home games and can be purchased by visiting RedStormTix.com or by calling 718-990-6211.
