QUEENS, N.Y. -
After helping lead the St. John’s women’s basketball team to a 92-81 win over William & Mary last Friday and the program’s first 2-0 start since the 2014-15 campaign, junior Akina Wellere has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced Monday.

Wellere was instrumental in the Red Storm’s huge third quarter against the Tribe. As a team, the Johnnies scored a school-record 36 points to pull away from William & Mary. Individually, Wellere accounted for 15 of the 36 points. Wellere, a Preseason All-BIG EAST pick, couldn’t miss in the third, knocking down all five of her attempts from the field including her lone attempt from long distance. From the free throw line, the junior hit all four of her tries.

The Chicago native finished with a career-high 21 points and six assists while grabbing four rebounds in a game-high 36 minutes of action. Wellere hit six of her 12 attempts from the field and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Wellere and the Red Storm return to action on Friday, Nov. 24, when they open play in the Gulf Coast Showcase at 11 a.m. against Western Michigan.
