St. John's Looks To Extend Six-Game Winning Streak On Friday

    The St. John's women's basketball team will look to extend its six-game winning streak on Friday when it travels to face local foe Columbia at 12:30 p.m. The game has been designated as New York City Education Day, where students from 13 different public schools will be in attendance.

    History Lesson
    • The contest between St. John's and Columbia will be the first meeting in history between the teams.

    Scouting The Lions
    • Columbia is off to a 4-3 start this season. After splitting its first two games in 2009-10, the Lions won two straight before going on a two-game losing streak. The team snapped its losing streak with a 75-63 win over Delaware on Dec. 2.

    • Three players are averaging double-figures in scoring for the Lions, including one player who is averaging a double-double. Judie Lomax is leading the team in scoring in rebounding, averaging 14.3 points and 13.0 rebounds. Lauren Dwyer is a close second with 13.1 points per game, while Kathleen Barry rounds out the double-digit scorers with 12.3 ppg. Barry is also the team's second-leading rebounder, grabbing 5.9 boards per game.

    Perfect Six-Game Start
    • The Red Storm has opened up a season with a perfect 6-0 record a total of five times, four under the direction of eighth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico.

    Red Storm Receive Votes In Both Polls Week No. 3
    • After winning the FIU Thanksgiving Classic with wins over Florida and Saint Joseph's Nov. 27-29, St. John's received votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls in week three. The Red Storm has been recognized for three-straight weeks in the AP Poll and received nine votes in week No. 3. For the first time this season, St. John's was recognized in the Coaches Poll, receiving one vote in the third week.

    Stepping Up
    • In the Red Storm's 87-51 win over Stetson on Dec. 1, St. John's had four different players other than its two leading scorers step up in the game offensively.

    Sky Lindsay scored a game-high 18 points, going 6-of-10 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. She was one point from tying her career high of 19. The junior did set a new personal best with a game-high eight assists, and filled up the stat sheet with four rebounds, one block and one steal.

    Kelly McManmon recorded her first double-digit scoring game of the year with 15 points off the bench. The senior was 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from long distance. She also added five rebounds, two assists and one steal.

    Joy McCorvey had a double-double with a 14-point, 11-rebound performance. McCorvey, who scored 12 of her 14 points in the final frame, was 7-of-11 from the field. With her 11 boards in the game, the senior entered the Red Storm career record books and moved into a tie for ninth place with 597 rebounds.

    • Rookie Amanda Burakoski contributed 12 points off the bench en route to her first-career double-digit scoring game. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native was 4-of-8 from the field, 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. She also added a game-high four blocks in 19 minutes of action.

    Climbing Up The Charts
    • With 11 rebounds against Stetson on Dec. 1, McCorvey entered the top 10 on St. John's all-time rebounding list and tied Marianne Noonan for ninth place with 597. The senior is only six away from tying Debbie Beckford for eighth all-time with 603 boards.

    30-Point Victories
    • St. John's offense has gotten into rhythm early and often this season and defeated three of its first six opponents by 30 points or more. The Red Storm opened the campaign on Nov. 15 at Stony Brook and defeated its in-state foe by 37 points, 89-52. Three players reached double-figures in scoring in the contest. In the Red Storm's next outing of the year, the team defeated UMass on the road by 30 points, 82-52. Four STJ players scored 10-or-more points in the victory. On Dec. 1, St. John's cruised to the 36-point victory over Stetson, 87-51, as four Red Storm players scored 10-plus points.
