QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading the St. John's women's basketball team to wins over Albany and Miami last week, Tiana England has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday, marking the second time this season a Red Storm rookie earned the accolade.
England was a key part in the Johnnies' two wins last week, averaging 14.5 points, 7.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in 39.0 minutes per game. The redshirt freshman shot 73.3 percent from the field, hitting 11 of her 15 tries while knocking down six of her seven attempts from the free throw line for an 85.7 percent success rate.
England finished one assist shy of her first career double-double at Albany, scoring a season-high 16 points and dishing out nine helpers. The 5-7 guard hit all six of her attempts from the field and grabbed a season-best seven rebounds in 39 minutes.
Against Miami, the Stamford, Conn., native continued her solid play with a 13-point, six-assist effort as the Red Storm defeated the Hurricanes. England shot 5-for-9 from the field and converted all three of her free throw attempts.
Through seven games, England leads the BIG EAST with 6.0 assists per outing and ranks eighth in the league with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio and 10th in the conference with 33.6 minutes per game.
England and the Red Storm return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9, when they begin a four-game homestretch against James Madison with tip off at 2 p.m.
