Myles Second Straight Double Double Leads SJU To 61-45 Win Over UMBC
 
 


 

 
JAMAICA, NY  Center Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) recorded her second consecutive double double with 17 points and a career-best 14 rebounds to lead the St. Johns University womens basketball team to a convincing 61-45 win over visiting UMBC Tuesday night in Alumni Hall.

The win was the third in the last four games for the Red Storm, who improve to 4-3 on the season. UMBC falls to 3-5.

The Red Storm never trailed in the game and used a very balanced scoring attack throughout. In the first half, nine of the 10 Red Storm players to get in the game contributed at least two points, as the Red Storm mounted a 40-20 lead in the first 20 minutes.

Leading 23-17 at the 6:47 mark of the first half, the Red Storm used an 12-0 burst to extend their lead to 35-17, and maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. The Red Storm led by as many as 28 in the game and held the Retrievers to just .286 per cent from the floor. St. Johns bench outscored UMBCs by a 20-4 margin and as a team the Red Storm forced 25 Retriever turnovers while picking off a season-high 18 steals.

Myles 17 points were a game-high as she also contributed three blocks and had two steals. Junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) scored in double figures for the seventh straight game with 11 points to go along with three steals and six rebounds. Freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) came off the bench to score five points, pull down five rebounds and dish out a team-high four assists. Senior Latasha Thompson (Newark, N.J.) chipped in eight points and had three steals, while junior Giani Bowles (Detroit, Mich.), who was slowed by an injury early in the season, saw a season-high 19 minutes of action, scoring four points and dishing out a pair of assists.

St. Johns will conclude its three-game homestand on Sunday, December 17 when it hosts Buffalo in a non-conference game at 2:00
