QUEENS, N.Y. - The Mrs. Eleanor Taffner St. John's-Chartwells Tournament MVP, sophomore Shenneika Smith, was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second-straight week on Dec. 20, after her 17.0 points per game helped then-No. 18 St. John's to another undefeated weekend.
The honor is the third this year, who garnered BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades three times as a rookie in 2009-10.
A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, Smith scored in double-figures in both wins, with a 19-point effort against Southern Mississippi (Dec. 18) in the first game and 15 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks in the tournament championship victory over UC-Santa Barbara (Dec. 19).
Playing injured, Smith helped the Red Storm come alive in the second half against UCSB on Sunday, and scored 10-straight points during a three-minute span, helping St. John's take a 51-37 lead with under five minutes to play in the game.
Smith has scored in the double-digits in five-consecutive games for St. John's. The sophomore leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game and ranks 15th in BIG EAST. She is also tied with Centhya "Coco" Hart for 10th in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per game.
Up next, St. John's will have a week hiatus before taking to the road to College Park, Md., to play in the Maryland Terrapin Classic on Dec. 28-29. St. John's will first face Liberty in a field of four teams which also includes Maryland and La Salle. The Red Storm and Flames will tip off at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
