DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The St. John's women's golf team took the home of the 2015 BIG EAST Championship by storm on Monday, taking a 15-stroke lead after the opening round of the LIU Lonnie Barton Invitational at the LPGA International Jones Course.
The Red Storm ended the day with a team total of 302 (+14) after finishing with golfers in each of the top three individual positions.
"The team played well today and took advantage of great conditions," said head coach Ambry Bishop.
With the help of her first collegiate ace on the second hole of the day, freshman Daniella Castañeda was able to end the round atop the leaderboard, finishing the day with a career-best round of 72 (E).
"It was very exciting," said Castañeda about her hole-in-one. "I was not expecting it at all! I was really excited and it totally helped me to raise my energy and stay focused on my game during the entire round."
Senior Cameron Lambertson also set a career-best in the opening round, finishing the day with a one-over round of 73 (+1) to move into second place while junior Anna Kim rounded out the Top 3 on the leaderborad with a 74 (+2).
Rounding out the Red Storm's team total of 302 (+14) was Brittany Hurst who also saw a career-best, finishing the day with an 83 (+11) to tie for 40th overall.
"After the excitement of Daniella's [Castañeda] hole-in-one, she was able to play consistent all day and come in with her lowest score of the season," added Bishop. "It was also great to see Cameron [Lambertson] play well and finish up with a 73. Anna [Kim] played consistent and battled through a stomach bug all day and Brittany [Hurst] rounded out the team scores with much better play today to help maintain a low team score."
Lindsey Oliva made her collegiate debut for the Red Storm as well on Monday, finishing the day with a 100 (+28) for 83rd overall.
The Red Storm will look to secure first place on Tuesday as it joins Albany and LIU Brooklyn in the final round of action with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
