PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 12, 2011)— The St. John’s women’s golf team is in third place after the first round of the Rutgers Women’s Invitational at the Rutgers University Course (Piscataway, N.J.). Leading the way for the Red Storm is junior Jennifer Neville, who is in a tie for second place—one shot off the lead—heading into Saturday’s play. “We didn’t play particularly well today, but we had some periods where we were really good, and then we would follow that up with a few bad holes,” head coach Ambry Bishop said. St. John’s carded a team score of 312(+24), nine behind leader and host Rutgers, who shot a 303(+15). This past Monday, the Red Storm rallied from an identical deficit in the final round to claim the Richmond Spider Invitational. There was a slight drizzle on the course all day, creating conditions where no player was at or below par during the first round. “There were a lot of ground under repair areas on the course, and a few more areas that probably could have been labeled as ground under repair,” Neville said. “The greens were pretty soaked which made it tough on putting, and the ball wasn’t getting as much roll in the fairway.” Neville was still able to post her second straight round of 75 or better, shooting a 41 on the front nine, and then coming back with a 34 on the back to come in at 75(+3). “Jennifer played really well today, and she’s been playing great golf for us all season,” Bishop said. “After transferring from USF, and sitting out last year, she was able to work on a lot of things, really get better and has come out strong this year.” Sophomore Harin Lee is tied for 17th after shooting a 78(+6), while senior Ellen Oswald is also in the top-25, tying for 25th with a first-round 79(+7). Sophomore Stephanie Eybers and junior Sebin Kim are tied for 32nd after shooting 80(+8) apiece in the first round. “We came back from nine strokes last week, and if we play well again, then there’s no reason we can’t win tomorrow,” Neville said. Play tomorrow begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, playing 18 holes. The Red Storm is optimistic that it can make it two straight comebacks. “We can only control what we do tomorrow,” Bishop said. “If we’re going to come back it starts with us playing well, and then getting a little bit of help.” Forecasts are calling for more soggy conditions Saturday, plus high winds, making for an unpredictable finish to the Red Storm’s fall season.
