SEEKONK, Mass. - The St. John’s women’s golf team finished strong at the Brown Bear Invitational on Tuesday, with Alejandra Sanchez and Kaitleen Shee each earning top-10 honors to help propel the Johnnies to a second-place finish.
“I was very pleased with our play this weekend,” Head Coach Ambry Bishop said. “Even though we had a break in our schedule, we worked really hard and continued creating competitive environments during practice over the last few weeks to help make us even stronger at the Brown event.”
Sanchez, who was tied for first following the first day of play, where she carded a one-under 70 paced the Johnnies by posting an accumulative three-over 144 (70, 74) for both rounds. The junior’s second day performance was highlighted by three birdies on the par-four, putting her just three strokes shy the leader spot in a tie for fourth.
“Hard work has paid off,” Sanchez said. “I was struggling my first couple weeks but I worked really hard this past weekend and felt very good with myself and my performance. My first round score was actually my first under par round at the collegiate level which I was very excited about. Looking forward, I can’t wait for our home tournament next weekend.”
Shee entered Tuesday after a promising first round where she registered a one-over 72. The sophomore posted a two-over 73 in the final round, draining three birdies on the front-nine to card an overall 145 and finish tied for sixth in the tournament.
As a team, St. John's carded a season-low 603 (+35) with Lydia Kim putting up a 78, Andrea Sanchez posting an 83 and Sofie Huseby rounding out scoring for the Johnnies with an 83.
Seton Hall claimed the team title with a final score of 569. As for individuals, Seton Hall’s Mia Ness defeated fellow teammate Madeline Sager in an exciting, four-hole playoff. Ness and Sager both shot a 141 over two rounds.
The Johnnies will conclude their fall slate on Oct. 23 when they host their lone home event at the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.
